The NAB Leadership Foundation announced Aug. 17 the launch of the Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Resource Center, a website dedicated to helping media companies and industry professionals create and sustain a diverse and inclusive workplace, according to an association statement. The center will connect organizations with associations and consultants with expert knowledge of diversity, inclusion and equity issues.
"As our nation engages in ongoing discussions about diversity and inclusion, NABLF is committed to helping organizations realize workplaces that are welcoming to all voices," said Michelle Duke, NABLF President and NAB Chief Diversity Officer. "By launching the Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Resource Center, we can connect organizations with the expertise and experience they need to foster an open and inviting culture."
AGU announced Aug. 13 it had identified eight action areas to combat systemic racism in the geosciences community. The group plans to take action on each area in the weeks and months ahead:
- Expand funding for AGU's diversity and inclusion efforts.
- Diversify AGU's governance and committees.
- Enable, recognize and reward diversity in the association's honors.
- Create truly diverse meetings.
- Review diversity, equity and inclusion across AGU's publications.
- Support the success of emerging underrepresented scientists.
- Advocate for policies that eliminate racial injustice.
- Partner with leaders across STEM to remove systemic racism and foster culture change.
AGU said the eight action areas build on a call to action from Geoscientists of Color, notimeforsilence.org. and conversations within AGU. Notimeforsilence.org issued "A call to action for an anti-racist science community from geoscientists of color: Listen, act, lead" in June. The letter calls for scientific professional societies, particularly those in the geosciences, to develop "robust and meaningful" diversity, equity and inclusion strategic plans.
"We applaud the recent statements of the American Meteorological Society, the Geological Society of America, and the American Geophysical Union and now call on them for decisive action," the letter says.
